One of the most common questions we get at TrashCo DFW is: "Can I put _____ in the dumpster?" The answer is almost always yes for regular household junk and construction debris — but there are important exceptions that are regulated by Texas law and our disposal facility's requirements.

✅ Quick answer for 90% of projects: Furniture, appliances (without freon), drywall, wood, flooring, carpet, yard waste, shingles, and general household junk — all fine. If you're doing a home cleanout, remodel, or roof replacement, you're almost certainly good to go.

What's Prohibited in a Texas Dumpster
The following items cannot go in a standard roll-off dumpster anywhere in Texas. These restrictions exist because of state environmental regulations, EPA rules, and safety requirements at disposal facilities.

⚠️ The freon rule is the most commonly missed: If you're doing an estate cleanout or renovating a kitchen, check every appliance. Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers all contain refrigerant. The shell goes in the dumpster — but only after an EPA-certified technician removes the refrigerant. Call an HVAC company or appliance recycler in DFW — most charge $20–$50 per unit.
The "Maybe" Category — Call Us First
Heavy Materials (Concrete, Dirt, Rock)
Accepted, but extremely heavy. Our 14-yard flat rate includes 2 tons — half a dumpster of concrete can hit that limit fast. Call first so we can advise on load management.
Treated Lumber (Older Than 2004)
Pressure-treated lumber made before 2004 may contain arsenic (CCA treatment). Generally still accepted in roll-off dumpsters, but disposal facility policies vary. Call us to confirm.
Plaster / Lathe (Older Homes)
Plaster and lathe from homes built before 1980 may contain asbestos. If you're unsure, have it tested by a certified inspector before demolition. This is serious — asbestos in a dumpster is illegal.
Dirt & Sod
Accepted but extremely heavy. A cubic yard of dirt weighs over 2,000 lbs. If you need to dispose of large quantities of soil, call us first for a custom quote.
DFW Household Hazardous Waste Resources
For all the items that can't go in a dumpster, DFW has solid disposal options:
- City of Dallas HHW — McCommas Bluff Landfill, 5100 Youngblood Rd, Dallas. Open Saturdays. Accepts paint, chemicals, batteries, fluorescents.
- Fort Worth HHW — 6400 Bridge St, Fort Worth. Open Saturdays year-round. Free for Fort Worth residents.
- Arlington HHW — Held periodically at various sites; check the Arlington city website for dates.
- PaintCare Drop-Offs — Free latex paint drop-off at participating hardware stores including Sherwin-Williams, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware across DFW.
- Best Buy Electronics Recycling — Free drop-off of TVs, computers, monitors at all DFW locations. Limit 3 items per day.
- Tire Retailers — Most tire shops (Discount Tire, Firestone, NTB) accept old tires for a small fee ($2–$5 per tire).
