Instead of the dumpster's full weight bearing down directly on the driveway through a few narrow wheel contact points, the boards spread that same weight across a much wider area. Less pressure per square inch means less chance of cracking a slab or leaving a permanent indentation in asphalt.
It's a low-tech solution, but it works because the physics are simple: pressure is weight divided by contact area, and boards increase the contact area substantially. The same principle is why snowshoes work on soft snow, or why a wide tire sinks less into mud than a narrow one.
