Spring cleaning in Dallas-Fort Worth is not really about dusting baseboards. It is about the stuff that has been quietly piling up since last spring: the closet that will not close, the garage where the car has not parked in two years, the spare room that became a holding pen for boxes, and the kids' outgrown everything. A trash can will not touch that. A dumpster in the driveway turns a month of putting it off into a single productive weekend.
TrashCo DFW delivers cleanout dumpsters from our Cedar Hill yard to homes across the metroplex, from Cedar Hill and DeSoto to Plano and Frisco. This guide walks through when to book, how to size the container, a room-by-room plan, and the handful of items that cannot go in. Although we call it spring cleaning, everything here applies just as well to a fall cleanout, which is increasingly popular before the holidays.
Why DFW Homeowners Do the Big Cleanout in Spring (and Fall)
North Texas has two comfortable windows for outdoor work: roughly late February through April, and again from October through early December. Summer afternoons regularly top 100 degrees, which makes hauling a couch out to a driveway miserable and makes a garage feel like an oven. Spring also lines up with garage sales, tax refunds, and the post-winter urge to reset, while fall lines up with hosting for the holidays.
There is a practical side too. A lot of DFW neighborhoods, particularly HOA communities in Mansfield, Flower Mound, and Allen, run community cleanup weeks in spring, and bulk trash pickup from the city is limited in size and frequency. A rental dumpster has no such limit: you fill it on your own schedule, with nobody counting items at the curb.
What Size Dumpster Do You Need?
Both TrashCo DFW containers are 14 feet long and 7 feet wide, so either one fits in a normal driveway. The difference is height: 4 feet for the 14-yard and 6 feet for the 21-yard. Spring cleaning debris is mostly bulky and light (furniture, boxes, bags), so volume is nearly always the deciding factor rather than weight. Both sizes include a 2-ton allowance.
| Your Project | Recommended Size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few closets and a spare room | 14-Yard — $350 | Plenty of room for clothes, boxes, and a couple of furniture pieces |
| Garage plus a couple of rooms | 14-Yard — $350 | Fits a moderately full two-car garage plus light indoor clutter |
| Whole-house declutter, 3-4 bedrooms | 21-Yard — $450 | The extra 2 feet of height absorbs mattresses, sofas, and bulky items |
| Garage, attic, and shed in one go | 21-Yard — $450 | Avoids paying for a second delivery halfway through |
| Cleanout plus yard work or fence repair | 21-Yard — $450 | Yard debris is heavier and bulkier than it looks |
| Estate or downsizing cleanout | 21-Yard — $450 | See our estate cleanout guide |
Rule of thumb: if you are debating between sizes, take the 21-yard. Spring cleaning always snowballs: once the first closet is empty, you start eyeing the next one. The $100 difference costs far less than a second delivery.

A Room-by-Room Spring Cleaning Plan
The people who finish a cleanout in one weekend are the ones who work in a sequence instead of wandering. Here is an order that works well with a dumpster in the driveway:
1. Garage and storage first
Start with the biggest volume and the fewest emotions. Broken lawn furniture, old bikes, and cardboard go in early and give you a feel for how much room is left. Our garage cleanout guide covers the hazardous items to set aside.
2. Bedrooms and closets
Old mattresses, broken dressers, and bags of clothes you will not donate. Donate usable items first, then toss the rest. Keep a "donate" pile out of the dumpster path.
3. Kitchen and pantry
Expired food, worn-out cookware, and the small appliances you have not touched since the last holiday. Bag food waste tightly so it does not linger in the Texas sun.
4. Yard and patio last
Dead shrubs, storm-damaged branches, and rotted fence pickets. Yard debris is heavy, so load it flat on the bottom. More in our yard waste dumpster guide.
What Can and Cannot Go in a Spring Cleaning Dumpster
Almost everything that fills a house is fine: furniture, mattresses, clothing, toys, carpet, books, wood, cardboard, broken fixtures, and general household junk. The exceptions are the things that are hazardous or regulated by Texas landfills, and a spring cleanout tends to turn up all of them:
| Item | In the Dumpster? | What to Do Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture, mattresses, boxes, clothing | Yes | Break down large pieces to save space |
| Yard debris, branches, old fence boards | Yes | Load heavy items flat on the bottom |
| Fridges, freezers, window/portable A/C, dehumidifiers | Separate, $30/item | TrashCo hauls these separately to a Freon-certified facility |
| Liquid paint, stain, solvents, pesticides | No | Household hazardous waste drop-off |
| Batteries, motor oil, antifreeze | No | Free recycling at most auto parts stores |
| Tires and propane tanks | No | Tire shops and propane exchange retailers |
| Pool chemicals, fertilizer, cleaners | No | Hazardous waste facility in your city or county |
Heads up on appliances: the spare fridge in the garage and the old window A/C unit are the classic spring cleaning finds, and refrigerant makes them unsuitable for the regular load. TrashCo DFW picks them up for a flat $30 per item, so you do not have to find a Freon-certified drop-off yourself. Dumpster, Junk Removal, or Bulk Trash Pickup?
Many DFW cities offer limited bulk trash pickup, but there are caps on size, quantity, and scheduling, and the crew will not take everything. Junk removal services load for you but charge by volume and often cost more for a whole-house job. A rental dumpster works best when you want to move at your own pace over several days, because the flat rate does not change whether you fill it in an afternoon or over the weekend. We compare the two options in detail in our guide to dumpster rental vs. junk removal in DFW. If you are cleaning out as part of a move, the moving house guide is the better fit.
Placement, Permits, and HOA Rules
- Driveway placement needs no permit. That is true across the DFW metroplex. Permits only apply to street placement, and our permit guide covers the city-by-city details.
- Leave about 60 feet of straight clearance for the truck, and watch for low branches and overhead lines.
- Protect the driveway. Plywood under the rails is cheap insurance on newer concrete or pavers.
- Check HOA rules. Spring is peak HOA season, and some communities limit how long a container can sit visible from the street. See our HOA dumpster rules guide.
Timing, Weight, and Keeping the Rental on Schedule
Every TrashCo DFW rental includes 5 days and 2 tons. Most spring cleanouts are volume-heavy and weight-light, so overage is rare, but bagged yard waste, old exercise equipment, and leftover masonry add up. Overage is $80 per ton above the allowance. Our weight limit guide explains how to estimate. For first-timers, the first-time dumpster rental tips cover the whole process, and extra days are $20 each if you need more time. See also how long you can keep a rental dumpster.
Because spring weekends book up quickly, call a week ahead if you want a specific day. And with live driver GPS tracking, which no other DFW company offers consumers, you can watch the truck on its way instead of waiting around all morning.
